Police have launched an investigation after a woman was found dead in a pond at Lowther Gardens in Lytham, Lancashire.

Emergency services were called to the park at around 9am on the morning of September 7, following reports that a body had been spotted in the water.

A significant emergency response attended the scene shortly afterwards, bringing together police officers, firefighters, and an air ambulance crew.

The woman was found dead at the scene, and officers are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding how she died.

At this stage, police have confirmed that they have not yet established the woman's identity, and they are formally treating the death as unexplained while their enquiries continue.

The emergency response led to a widespread cordon across the site, with access to the park restricted throughout the morning.

Entrances leading into Lowther Gardens were blocked by police vehicles, and emergency tape was stretched across the gates to prevent anyone from entering.

Inside the perimeter, staff were reportedly still inside the Lowther Pavilion building while the surrounding grounds remained sealed off by investigating officers.

The closure also disrupted visitors planning to use the park that morning, including a walking group scheduled to enter the gardens at 10.30am who were reportedly left shocked by what had occurred.

What we don't know yet is the identity of the woman or the specific events leading up to the discovery, and officers have not provided any further details while their initial enquiries remain active.

The discovery prompted messages of sympathy online, where people took to social media to react to the news, with one user on Facebook posting, "My thoughts go out to her friends, family and whoever knew the person," and another writing, "So sad R.I.P."
