Two men have been arrested and a haul of stolen food and drink recovered after police caught suspects during an evening burglary at a Greggs bakery in Nottingham.

Officers were dispatched to the national chain's premises on Midland Way in Radford at 7.26pm on Tuesday, August 25.

The emergency response was triggered by reports that intruders were seen entering and leaving the bakery while the store was closed to the public.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that officers were already out conducting mobile community patrols in the area, allowing them to respond instantly to the break-in report.

Within just a few minutes of receiving the call, officers located a suspect nearby and arrested a 40-year-old man on suspicion of burglary.

A second suspect, aged 54, was detained shortly afterwards, with both men arrested on suspicion of burglary while police recovered bags packed with the suspected stolen goods.

Police Constable Lee Lane highlighted the swift response as clear evidence of the benefits of visible community policing, noting: "This job provided a great example of exactly why we conduct the patrols within the community that we do."

"By being out on the roads already, we were able to quickly react to a call about a shop burglary that had just happened and spot a suspect within a few minutes," PC Lane said. "Having arrested him, a second suspect was also then detained soon after, while we were able to recover bags full of food and drink items that we suspect had just been taken from the store in question."

The force stated that the arrests took place under Operation Arriving, a dedicated police initiative focused on tackling acquisitive crime across Radford.

Extra patrols are continuing throughout the city area under the operation as officers work to protect local businesses and deter further offences.
