Former England international footballer Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and drug offences following a single-vehicle motorway crash in his £270,000 Lamborghini earlier this year.

The collision took place at around 9am on 28 May, when the 31-year-old crashed his supercar into roadside barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, no other vehicles were involved in the incident and no injuries were reported.

Sterling was arrested at the scene before being released on bail. Police have now confirmed that the Berkshire resident faces three formal charges: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen.

A spokesman for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary set out the position in a statement: "A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3. Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen. The charges come following a single vehicle collision, involving a Lamborghini, on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange, on 28 May, 2026. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported. Mr Sterling is due to appear at Basingstoke magistrates court on September 15."

The legal proceedings come at a time when the Jamaica-born winger is without a club. Sterling has been a free agent since leaving Dutch side Feyenoord, managed by Robin van Persie, at the end of last season, having managed just 421 minutes of football for the team prior to his exit.

Sterling originally developed his game through the Queens Park Rangers academy before signing for Liverpool in 2010. He made his senior debut for the Reds in a league match against Wigan Athletic at the age of 17—becoming the third-youngest player in Liverpool's history—and went on to score 23 goals across 129 appearances in all competitions.

His performances earned him a £49 million move to Manchester City in 2015, which made him the most expensive English footballer ever at the time. Sterling spent seven years working under Pep Guardiola in Manchester, collecting four Premier League titles, five League Cups, one FA Cup, and a Champions League title.

He returned to London in 2022 to sign for Chelsea, where he spent two seasons before heading to Arsenal on loan. On the international stage, Sterling earned 82 caps and scored 20 goals for England, making his last appearance for the national team during the 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

Sterling is now due to appear before Basingstoke Magistrates' Court on 15 September. I will be following this one as the case progresses.
