Fifa's disciplinary committee has banned three Argentina players for their roles in a brawl at the end of last month's World Cup final against Spain, while also penalising the Argentine Football Association over a Falkland Islands banner.
The disciplinary rulings address two separate incidents from the tournament, covering both the altercation that broke out after the final and a political demonstration that took place after the semi-final win over England.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest individual sanction from the governing body. Paredes has been handed a 10-match ban alongside a $90,000 (£66,000) fine.
Defender Nahuel Molina has also been sanctioned by Fifa's disciplinary committee. Molina was given a seven-match suspension and must pay an identical fine of $90,000 (£66,000).
Thiago Almada is among the suspended players following the final against Spain. The disciplinary action from the match also extends beyond the Argentina squad, with Gavi suspended as well.
Alongside the bans for the physical disorder at the end of the final, Fifa addressed the display of a Falkland Islands banner during the tournament celebrations.
The banner was displayed by Argentina players following their semi-final victory over England. For this specific incident, the players involved have only been fined rather than receiving match suspensions.
However, the governing body has taken financial action against the national federation itself. Fifa issued a $321,000 fine to the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in relation to the Falkland Islands banner.
What we do not know yet is the exact duration of the suspensions handed to Almada and Gavi, as specific match lengths were not detailed alongside those of Paredes and Molina.
We also await confirmation on whether the AFA or the individual players intend to lodge formal appeals against the fines and suspensions. I'll be following this one — check back for updates.
