Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has been returned to prison after a brief medical evaluation at a hospital in the country’s capital.
The 73-year-old former leader was transferred to the hospital in the early hours of Friday morning under direct orders from Pakistan's Supreme Court, following weeks of sustained uproar surrounding his reportedly deteriorating health.
However, his stay at the medical facility was short-lived. After spending only a few hours undergoing examination, Khan was taken straight back to Adiala prison in Rawalpindi.
The confirmation came on Friday from a spokesperson for Khan's political party, who verified that the former prime minister had already completed the visit and was returned to custody several hours later.
To give you the broader picture, concerns regarding Khan's physical condition have been escalating for weeks. Mounting public attention and political controversy over reports that his health was in decline ultimately led to the intervention by the country's highest court, which mandated the official medical check.
The Supreme Court stepped in to ensure that the former prime minister received an evaluation away from his cell, resulting in the early-hours transfer to the capital.
What we don't know yet is the specific outcome of the hospital evaluation. As it stands, neither medical staff nor party officials have publicly shared details about the precise nature of Khan's condition, the results of any tests carried out during those hours, or whether any formal treatment plan was recommended.
It also remains unclear whether his representatives will pursue further legal steps through the courts regarding his ongoing medical care while he remains detained in Rawalpindi.
For now, Khan remains held inside Adiala prison as the questions surrounding his health continue. I'll be following this one — check back for updates.
