Two cyclists have died and three people have been arrested after a car struck a group of riders in the Kent village of Cobham.

The collision happened at around 7.47am near Gravesend. According to Kent Police, a white Ford Focus travelling along Sole Street towards Meopham collided with three cyclists near the junction with Round Street.

Paramedics attended the scene and confirmed that two of the riders — a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s — had died. Police have confirmed that both of their next of kin have now been informed.

A third cyclist who was riding with the group was taken to hospital for treatment. Officers have confirmed that this rider's injuries were minor.

Following the incident, police arrested three people. Two men, aged 20 and 21, were taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A 19-year-old woman was also detained by officers on suspicion of assisting an offender, according to Kent Police.

Diane Morton, the Kent County Council member for Gravesham Rural, responded to the incident with a statement offering her support to those affected. "I am devastated by the tragic loss of two innocent cyclists in Cobham today," she said. "My sincere condolences go to their families and friends at this incredibly difficult time."

She continued: "I also want to extend my deepest sympathy to the cyclist who was injured and who has lost friends in this tragic incident. My thoughts are very much with them, and I wish them a full and speedy recovery. Our officers will do everything they can to support the criminal investigation into this tragic incident."

Morton added that she has spoken with the county council cabinet member for highways and transport about road safety in the area. "I welcome their support as we look at what further practical measures can be put in place to improve road safety and support the local community," she said. "I will be supporting a thorough review of the circumstances and of the measures that can be taken to help prevent a tragedy like this from happening again."

The force's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) has taken charge of the inquiry and is actively appealing for witnesses to come forward. Investigators want to speak to anyone who saw the collision happen, or who spotted the white Ford Focus or the cyclists in the moments leading up to the crash.
