Broadcaster Trevor Nelson has revealed the reason behind his recent absence from BBC Radio 2, explaining that he stepped away from his presenting duties to undergo surgery for a brain tumour.

If you regularly tune in and have been wondering why he has been away from the station, let me walk you through everything he has shared. Nelson took to his Instagram account to explain the situation directly, telling followers that the tumour was discovered while he was simply carrying on with his normal everyday life.

The unexpected discovery came as a major shock to the presenter. Given the nature of the diagnosis, it prompted him to stop work straight away and step back from his broadcasting commitments to focus entirely on his health.

According to Nelson, he was initially presented with different treatment options before proceeding with medical intervention. Several weeks after discussing those paths, he underwent what he termed “a very serious surgery” — a major procedure that he confirmed went incredibly well.

Following the operation, Nelson has spent the past month at home resting, recovering, and recuperating. Alongside taking time out to heal, he has also been undergoing post-operative treatment as part of his ongoing care.

For those who have been concerned about his wellbeing, the recovery seems to be moving in a very positive direction. Nelson shared that he has been getting back into his usual routine where possible, including spending time playing golf and going to the gym.

However, while he is returning to physical activities, he has not yet stepped back into his professional work. He explained that he has not yet returned to DJing or to his regular radio broadcasts, even though his physical condition continues to improve.

That return to work may not be far off, though, judging by his own assessment of his health. Speaking candidly about his current state of mind, Nelson said: “I feel great right now. I feel ready to come back. I feel energised, I feel almost back to myself.”

Reflecting on what he described as a “very serious situation” over the summer, the presenter also took time to express his heartfelt gratitude. He thanked listeners and supporters for the flood of kind messages and positive thoughts sent his way during his time away.

Let us be clear about what we do not know just yet. Nelson has not given a specific date for his on-air comeback, and we do not know exactly which show will mark his official return to BBC Radio 2. What we do know is that he is looking forward to getting back behind the microphone once the time is right.

It is always welcome news to see a presenter on the mend after such a significant health scare. I'll be following this one — check back for updates.
