Seven people have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a newborn baby girl at a property in Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police said officers were called out just before 6am over concerns for the safety of an infant. Emergency services attended the address on Holywell Heights, in the Wincobank area in the north east of the city, where the baby was found. Paramedics made every effort to save the child, but she was declared dead at the scene.

Following initial inquiries at the address, officers arrested seven people on suspicion of murder. South Yorkshire Police confirmed all seven remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Emma Knight, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are aware news of this will be deeply concerning, and I want to reassure our local communities that we have a dedicated team of detectives and officers hard at work to ensure justice is secured for the baby girl at the heart of this investigation."

DCI Knight added that detectives are working to determine the ages of some of those arrested. She stressed that the investigation is in its early stages and urged members of the public not to speculate about the incident.

A local resident told The Sheffield Star of his shock at the heavy emergency response, describing the street as usually quiet with few problems among neighbours.

Officers from South Yorkshire Police have remained at the scene into the evening as forensic inquiries continue.
