A 31-year-old British woman has died in hospital after being stabbed at a railway station in southern Germany during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The attack took place shortly before 01:00 local time (00:00 BST) at the main station in Rosenheim, a city in Upper Bavaria. Emergency services rushed the woman to hospital, but Bavarian Police confirmed in a statement that she died shortly afterwards as a result of what they described as "severe" injuries.

Officers detained a 27-year-old German man at the scene immediately following the stabbing. According to the German news agency DPA, the suspect comes from the nearby Fürstenfeldbruck district and is scheduled to appear before magistrates later on Sunday.

If you are unfamiliar with the geography, Rosenheim sits in southern Germany and operates as a major regional rail hub, connecting passengers to key Austrian cities including Salzburg, Innsbruck and Vienna.

The town is also currently hosting the Rosenheimer Herbstfest, a popular local festival similar to Munich's Oktoberfest. However, local officials have moved quickly to reassure the public that the attack appears to be an isolated incident.

Rosenheim's Mayor, Abuzar Erdogan, addressed the situation directly in a statement, confirming that "there are no indications of a security threat in our city or of any link to our Herbstfest." He added: "The criminal investigation department is working closely with the public prosecutor's office to investigate the circumstances and motive behind the crime as a matter of urgency."

Back in the UK, the Foreign Office has confirmed it is assisting the victim's relatives. A spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Germany [and] are in touch with the local authorities."

What we do not know yet is the motive behind the stabbing. German authorities have stated that the wider background remains under active investigation, and reports from DPA indicate it is still unclear whether the victim and suspect knew one another, or what brought the British woman to Bavaria.

Bavarian Police have issued an appeal for information, asking anyone who may have witnessed "an argument or physical altercation" at or near the station late on Saturday evening or early on Sunday morning to get in touch with investigators.
