A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 22-year-old was found dead with serious head injuries inside a property in Lambeth, south London.

We previously reported that the victim was believed to be in his 30s, but police have now confirmed he was 22 years old.

The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to the address on Poynders Road at around 8.35pm on Friday evening after being alerted by the London Fire Brigade, who had been sent to gain entry to the premises.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: "The brigade was called to effect an entry to a property on Poynders Road, Lambeth. Upon gaining entry, firefighters discovered the body of a man in the property. Despite the efforts of firefighters and paramedics, he was declared dead at the scene."

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell, who is leading the investigation, said officers believe the death was an isolated event.

"At this stage, we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no evidence to suggest any wider risk to the public," DCI Foxwell said in a statement.

Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information about what happened inside the property to come forward.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area, or who may have seen or heard anything unusual, to come forward and speak to us," DCI Foxwell said. "Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us understand the circumstances surrounding this man’s death."

What we do not know yet is the identity of the victim, details regarding the man in custody, or the full circumstances leading up to the fatal injuries.
