Members of the public tried to rescue seven-year-old Valentina Foster and her aunt Natalie McDonald before emergency crews arrived at a fatal house fire in Grangetown, an inquest has heard.

The details emerged during brief, separate inquest openings at Teesside Coroner's Court, where coroner Paul Appleton formally suspended proceedings due to ongoing criminal charges.

Cleveland Fire Brigade was called to the address on Birchington Avenue, near Middlesbrough, on 26 August after emergency services received reports that individuals were believed to be trapped inside the burning property.

Outlining the sequence of events, Mr Appleton told the hearing: "Prior to the arrival of the emergency services, members of the public made attempts to rescue people in the property."

Valentina was recovered from the house and transported to the James Cook University Hospital. The coroner noted: "Very sadly, Valentina was recovered from the property and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the James Cook University Hospital."

A post-mortem examination confirmed the seven-year-old died from the effects of fire. The coroner stated that Valentina was formally identified by her mother, who attended the hearing accompanied by relatives.

The same cause of death — the effects of fire — was recorded for 34-year-old Ms McDonald, who died at the scene. Mr Appleton confirmed that she was identified using dental records and a tattoo.

Following the fire, 23-year-old Jaden Wright appeared at Teesside Crown Court charged with two counts of murder. He has also been charged with offences relating to other individuals who suffered injuries in the blaze.

In a statement released via Cleveland Police, Ms McDonald's family said she had been married for nine months, adding: "She had the biggest, most beautiful wedding; she sparkled like the shining beauty she was. She was loved by everyone, she was bright, bubbly and full of life, the heart and soul of our street and community, loved by all. Her family has lost its beautiful, kind soul."

Valentina's family had previously released their own statement, saying: "It is with overwhelming sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved daughter has passed away. She was deeply loved and will be missed beyond words by her family, friends and everyone whose life she touched."
