Former Donegal All-Ireland football winner James McHugh has died following a road collision in County Cavan, with his wife Noreen also passing away from her injuries.

The crash occurred on Monday afternoon on the N3 at Drummallaght, situated between Virginia and Cavan town, involving a collision between a car and a van.

According to reporting from RTÉ, Mr McHugh's wife, Noreen, who was travelling as a passenger in the car, died on Tuesday evening after being airlifted to hospital following the incident. The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Mr McHugh, who was in his 60s, was a central figure in Gaelic football during the 1990s. He represented Donegal at inter-county level from 1990 until 1998, earning two Ulster Championship titles in 1990 and 1992.

His standout campaign came in 1992, when he was named an All-Star during the season Donegal lifted the Sam Maguire Cup for the first time in their history. In that landmark final, playing alongside his brother Martin, he scored a point in Donegal's 0-18 to 0-14 victory over Dublin at Croke Park.

Beyond that historic triumph, Mr McHugh won a Railway Cup with Ulster in 1994. At club level, he captured the Donegal Senior Football Championship with Cill Chartha in 1985, 1989, and 1993, with his family's sporting tradition continuing through his son Eoin, who is a member of the current Donegal panel.

Tributes have been paid across the sport, with Donegal GAA stating that Mr McHugh is "synonymous with the greatest day for Donegal football." The county board described him as an "All-Ireland winner, All-Star, a proud Donegal man and the proudest of Kilcar men, but above all James was a husband, a father, a brother, an uncle and a friend."

A reported tribute added that he was one of many people's first heroes and part of the group that "changed Donegal football forever when he and his teammates brought Sam Maguire to the hills for the first time in 1992." Doherty also paid tribute, stating that Mr McHugh "gave so much to Donegal GAA and will be remembered with great pride and affection across the county and beyond," extending thoughts to his family, friends, and the wider community.

His local club, CLG Chill Chartha, has suspended all club activity until further notice as a mark of respect. In a statement posted on X, the club said: "We, as a club, are devastated to hear of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our own, James McHugh."

Irish police are actively investigating the circumstances of the collision. Officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward, particularly asking any motorists who were in the area between 13:00 and 14:00 local time on Monday and who may have video footage to contact them.
