A 75-year-old British tourist has died after going for a swim off a beach in Lanzarote in a suspected drowning incident. Local police have confirmed the death of the UK holidaymaker following the incident, which took place on Wednesday afternoon in the popular resort of Puerto del Carmen.

The alarm was raised around 2.15pm on Wednesday at Los Pocillos Beach after the man went into the sea. His wife lost sight of him once he entered the water and reportedly alerted beach lifeguards to raise the alarm that he was missing.

That report initiated an immediate emergency response across the resort, which is located in the municipality of Tias on Lanzarote's south-east coast. The scene of the incident was Los Pocillos Beach, directly opposite the Jameos Hotel.

The area where the man entered the sea is a large, wide sandy stretch of coastline. Los Pocillos Beach is generally described as having calm, shallow water that is considered safe for families.

A major deployment of emergency personnel was dispatched to the area. Coastguard crews and a rescue helicopter were scrambled to the scene alongside local police and firefighters, with fire crews ultimately recovering the British tourist's body from the water.

Spain's Civil Guard is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that no foul play is suspected in connection with the man's death.

A post-mortem examination is already thought to have taken place. Under standard Spanish legal procedures, the medical findings are submitted directly to the investigating judge coordinating the inquiry, meaning the results are unlikely to be made public.

The tragedy in Puerto del Carmen comes as a five-year-old British boy fights for his life following a separate water incident on the island. The child nearly drowned yesterday in a holiday swimming pool in Playa Blanca, a resort situated nearby on Lanzarote's southernmost tip.

Following that near-drowning, the five-year-old was rushed to a hospital on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria, where he remains in what authorities have described as a "critical condition."

As the Civil Guard continues its work on the inquiry in Puerto del Carmen, the official findings will remain with the investigating judge overseeing the case. I'll be following this one.
