A third US aircraft carrier strike group carrying 10,000 troops has set sail for the Middle East, amid reports that President Donald Trump is considering launching a fresh military assault against Iran within weeks.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt departed San Diego on Sunday and is due to join the USS George HW Bush and the USS George Washington in the region by the end of November. Alongside the carrier, vessels from the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group deployed on Monday, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Together with ships from the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group already in position, the deployment adds to more than 50,000 US military personnel stationed across the region, according to a Navy official. If the George Washington remains in regional waters after the Roosevelt arrives, the combined naval force will mark the largest US military footprint in the Middle East since April, recalling Mr Trump's warnings in January of assembling a "massive armada".

It remains unconfirmed whether the George Washington will return to its home port in Japan. While neither the Pentagon nor US Central Command answered questions regarding the vessel's rotation schedule, Centcom later released footage showing the carrier conducting flight operations in regional Middle Eastern waters.

The crew aboard the Roosevelt are reportedly preparing for an extended mission. That follows concerns raised during the prolonged deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, where extended sea duty prompted fears over crew welfare, limited meals, and suicide attempts prior to a five-day port visit to Pattaya, Thailand, in early September.

The naval build-up comes after Mr Trump rejected an Iranian peace proposal intended to implement a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had demanded Washington meet "necessary conditions" set out in a 60-day memorandum of understanding.

Speaking to Time magazine, Mr Trump said he could not accept the agreement "because things that I wouldn't have approved a year ago I wouldn't have today", describing the terms as "not good enough". Asked about reports that he told Pentagon officials he is considering large-scale strikes on Iran after the midterms, Mr Trump acknowledged it was "possible" and stated that the US has been building up its weapons stockpiles.

The deployment also comes amid heightened regional and international tensions involving Tehran. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently stated that Israel warned Britain of an impending Iranian attack on UK soil nearly a month ago, while Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham cited a "strong indication" of Iranian involvement in a recent incident at RAF Fairford.

For now, the US maintains around 20 vessels in the area to enforce maritime security and escort commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Defence analyst Alan Mendoza noted that the effort to secure the strait while economically squeezing Iran is having an impact, with Iranian oil export shares dropping sharply.

Whether this latest naval reinforcement leads to renewed air strikes or continued economic and military pressure remains to be seen. I will continue to track developments as they unfold.
