A 30-year-old driver arrested following Sunday's fatal collision in Doncaster is suspected of being unfit through drugs, South Yorkshire Police have confirmed.

The force told the Daily Mail that officers were not pursuing the vehicle and had no involvement prior to the crash on White Rose Way, which connects Doncaster town centre to the M18.

We previously reported that the collision involved pedestrians on the carriageway. Police have now established that the black Mitsubishi L200 pick-up truck struck a group of four pedestrians who were on the pavement before crossing the central reservation and colliding with a black Audi and a silver BMW on the opposite side.

Two adult pedestrians died at the scene. Four other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries, which police have now confirmed are not life-threatening. Formal identification of the two victims is still being carried out while officers work to trace and notify their next of kin.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving while unfit. He has since been released on bail as inquiries continue.

White Rose Way was closed in both directions between Carriage Drive and Middle Bank Roundabout for more than 12 hours following the incident at around 11:00 BST on Sunday, but the road has now reopened.

Doncaster Central MP Sally Jameson offered condolences to the victims' families, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and urged anyone with information to contact investigators.
