Two people have died following what has been described as a workplace incident in County Down.

Emergency services were called out to the Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy at approximately 10:45 BST on Friday.

The emergency response involved three ambulances and two hazard response teams sent directly to the scene.

Despite the presence of emergency medical teams on the road, no patients were taken from the scene, and two fatalities were confirmed.

In a formal statement regarding the incident, it was stated: "We are currently liaising with the emergency services and other relevant agencies."

Local political representatives have since responded to the fatalities, expressing sympathy for those involved.

Democratic Unionist Party MP Gavin Robinson posted on social media to say that his "thoughts are with their families and loved ones at this devastating time".

Alliance Party MLA Peter McReynolds also commented on the situation, describing it as "an absolutely heartbreaking incident" and extending his thoughts to the families and the emergency service personnel who responded.

What we don't know yet are the exact circumstances that led to the incident, the nature of the site, or any further details about the two individuals who lost their lives.

Relevant agencies and emergency services remain in contact as the response to the incident continues.

I'll be following this one — check back for updates.
