The television pool boycott of the White House has caused immediate disruption to official event coverage, with technical problems marring administration livestreams on its first day.

According to reporting by the Huffington Post, an official White House social media broadcast of President Donald Trump unveiling a new South Lawn helipad on Monday was left largely inaudible after engine noise from Marine One drowned out his remarks without professional pool audio equipment present. A subsequent broadcast of an inaugural Military Spouse Commission meeting was streamed with an "audio only" disclaimer, drawing comment even from right-wing network Newsmax that the media ban appeared to be backfiring.

In a statement on its website, the White House dismissed the media backlash: "Access changes are nothing new. What is new, however, is the sudden claim that it becomes sacred only when the outlets are friendly to the Radical Left. The rule was never 'every outlet gets in.' It was always 'our side stays in.'"

The technical issues followed an announcement earlier on Monday that major US networks — ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC — were withdrawing from pool coverage duties in solidarity with CNN, Politico and MS NOW, which have been barred from the building. Under the long-standing pool arrangement, broadcasters share camera positions and footage to save space and resources.

Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, who helps organise television crews covering the presidency, confirmed in an email that "effective today, the TV pool will not be covering designated as pool coverage" of President Trump. In a joint statement, the five networks emphasised that "the public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government" and insisted that "no administration should restrict a news organisation because it objects to its reporting."

The boycott came alongside legal action from CNN, Politico and MS NOW, which filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday in the US District Court in Washington. The three organisations are asking a federal judge to quickly declare the ban unconstitutional under the First Amendment and prevent officials from enforcing it.

The dispute began on Friday when Trump announced the ban, accusing the three organisations of writing "fiction or lies" about his administration. By Saturday, journalists from the organisations were officially denied entry to the complex.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: "Fake News people and publications that only write negatively, and who violate our National Security by writing false and defamatory stories with unknown 'sources,' shouldn't be allowed access to the most important Office anywhere in the World." When asked about specific reporting behind the decision, Trump said it was "really just cumulative stories over the last few years", later adding that "the New York Times is fake news, the Washington Post is fake news."

In response, the three excluded organisations said in a joint statement: "Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists' credentials because it objected to our reporting." They explained that they launched legal action to "defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports".

The practical impact of the standoff was visible immediately on Monday morning, with CNN's regular five-seat basement booth shuttered and monitors switched off. Instead, a CNN crew broadcast live from a public pavement outside the secured perimeter.

The dispute unfolds as Trump heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where he is scheduled to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. For now, the main pool slot remains vacant, with conservative outlet Real America's Voice listed as a secondary crew.
