Police bodycam footage showing the arrest of former England footballer Raheem Sterling has been released, following his admission in court that he drove dangerously before crashing a Lamborghini in Hampshire earlier this year.

The video, captured on the morning of 28 May and released following court proceedings, shows officers arresting the 31-year-old after his Lamborghini Urus crashed into roadside infrastructure. Sterling pleaded guilty at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court to driving dangerously on the M25, the M3, the A327 and Minley Road. He also admitted possessing six canisters of nitrous oxide, a Class C drug, for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

The court heard how the vehicle strayed into the central reservation on the M3, exited at junction 4A, and veered off the A327 into a layby, colliding with roadside infrastructure. The impact caused substantial damage to all four wheels, leaving the car undriveable. Hampshire Police confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the single-car collision and no injuries were reported.

Prosecutor Simon Jones said police received multiple calls between 7:45 am and 8:52 am alerting them to dangerous driving on the two motorways. One witness, Fiona Jennings, told officers she saw the Lamborghini swerving across lanes on the M3 and initially thought an airbag had deployed before realising the driver was inhaling from an inflated white balloon. She reported witnessing what she described as "absolutely horrendous driving".

When officers arrived at the crash site near the Minley interchange, Sterling was sitting in the passenger seat with two canisters of nitrous oxide on his lap. In total, police found him in possession of six canisters of the substance.

Sterling complied with roadside tests, which came back clear for alcohol, cocaine and cannabis. However, subsequent impairment tests carried out at the Basingstoke police investigation centre concluded that he was impaired.

The court heard Sterling told custody staff that "he had a problem with nitrous oxide". But when asked to provide a blood sample for analysis, he did not give consent, requesting legal advice beforehand. The custody sergeant considered that he was "deliberately failing to provide a clear answer". In his subsequent police interview, Sterling accepted he had been the driver, but answered "no comment" to specific questions regarding the driving itself.

Defending Sterling, Jason Bartfeld KC acknowledged there was no dispute that the case sat in the "top category" due to "at times" serious impairment over short periods of the journey. However, the defence contested that the car had sustained serious damage and stated there had been "confusion" over the request to provide a specimen.

Sterling, who holds 82 England caps and received an MBE in 2021, most recently made eight appearances for Dutch side Feyenoord after leaving Chelsea in January. Across his senior career, he has played for Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City, where he won four Premier League titles.

District Judge Kirsty Allman ordered a pre-sentence report and granted Sterling unconditional bail alongside an interim driving disqualification. What we don't know yet is whether the case will remain in the magistrates' court or be sent to the Crown Court for sentencing.
