At least one of the young people killed in a fatal crash in Middlesbrough appeared in multiple videos posted on TikTok depicting dangerous driving.

The footage forms part of a wider pattern of material found across social media. An examination by BBC Verify identified dozens of videos depicting high-speed car chases, vehicles mounting and driving along footpaths, and cars travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Following the fatal crash and the emergence of these recordings, Cleveland Police confirmed they are conducting a wide-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the events.

Officers are examining what took place in the lead-up to the collision, confirming their inquiry is focused "into the criminality which took place prior to the fatal crash".

The force has also moved to address speculation regarding why the driving was filmed and shared online. Cleveland Police stated that "there is no evidence to indicate that filming of the activities that took place on Friday night and Saturday morning has taken place for the purposes of TikTok".

According to investigators, the activities currently under examination took place across Friday night and into Saturday morning, immediately preceding the fatal incident.

The findings by BBC Verify show that dozens of videos displaying dangerous manoeuvres — including high-speed pursuits and driving along pedestrian footpaths — remain easily accessible across social platforms.

What we don't know yet is the exact sequence of events during that Friday night and Saturday morning window, or the full identities of others who may have taken part in the driving shown across the various clips.

Cleveland Police have not released further operational details regarding potential arrests or specific individuals connected to the broader catalogue of footage.

The wide-scale investigation into the criminality prior to the fatal crash remains ongoing. I'll be following this one — check back for updates as more verified information is released.
