Sussex Police have formally concluded their investigation into the deaths of three sisters whose bodies were recovered from the sea off Brighton, finding no evidence of criminality or third-party involvement.

Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were pulled from the water near Black Rock in the early hours of 13 May. A post-mortem examination confirmed that all three women died from drowning.

Detectives tracing their final movements established that the sisters, who lived together in Greenford, west London, were dropped off by a taxi on Brighton's Madeira Drive at around 22:20 BST on 12 May.

Officers investigated whether the women visited any local businesses or nightclubs after arriving, but found no evidence that they did. Sussex Police confirmed there was "no evidence the women came to harm by any individuals" prior to their bodies being found.

Addressing the conclusion of the inquiry, Detective Chief Superintendent Adam Hays acknowledged the widespread attention the case has drawn.

"From the outset of this complex and challenging investigation, we have been acutely aware of the speculation surrounding this incident, the public's unanswered questions and their desire for answers," Hays said.

"Our priority throughout has been uncovering the truth for the loved ones of Jane, Rebecca and Christina, because at this incident's core there has always been a grieving family coming to terms with an unthinkable tragedy and loss."

The sisters were formally identified by their father, Joseph. In an earlier tribute, he said "no words can truly describe the pain of losing three daughters in the prime of their lives", describing them as "my joy, my strength, and the beautiful light that filled our family with happiness and love".

The full circumstances of how the sisters entered the water remain to be determined by the coroner.

An inquest opened in May at Brighton & Hove Coroner's Court is scheduled to resume in early October to establish the facts of where, when and how the sisters died. I will be following the proceedings as they continue.
