A driver has been arrested after a car struck a crowd of rugby league supporters gathered to see off the Newcastle Knights team coach in New South Wales.
The incident took place at around 9:30am local time on Saturday, 3 October, at the Transfield Drive roundabout on Newcastle Link Road. Emergency services confirmed that several people were injured and treated at the scene.
In a statement, New South Wales Police said: "About 9.30am today (Saturday 3 October 2026), emergency services were called to Newcastle Link Road at the Transfield Drive roundabout following reports a vehicle had struck multiple people in a crowd."
The force confirmed: "Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District are on scene, assisted by Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics. Several people have been injured and are currently receiving treatment at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was arrested at the scene. Newcastle Link Road has been closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed for some time while inquiries continue."
A major emergency operation was launched immediately following the collision, with more than 10 ambulances and three helicopters deployed to assist the casualties. The Newcastle Knights team coach was diverted onto an alternative route to continue its journey to Sydney.
A spokesperson for NSW Ambulance told the Daily Mail: "Several people are injured at this stage and the situation is still evolving."
Local MP Sonia Hornery urged people to stay clear of the area, stating: "I've just become aware of an incident involving a vehicle colliding with pedestrians on Newcastle Link Road while knights fans were there to cheer on the team coach. Emergency services are on site. Newcastle Link Road is closed in both directions. Please avoid the area. I hope everyone involved is ok."
Supporters had lined the road to wave off the squad ahead of Sunday's National Rugby League grand final on 4 October, which will decide the NRL premiership.
Sunday's fixture marks Newcastle's first appearance in the grand final since 2001. The team has seen a major turnaround this year under standout performances from England winger Dom Young, having finished bottom of the ladder in 2025.
NSW Police have asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at nsw.crimestoppers.com.au, requesting that details are not posted to police social media pages.
Inquiries into the circumstances of the collision remain ongoing, and I will update this report as more verified details emerge.
