A man in his 20s has died after emergency services and a bomb disposal unit were called to a residential property on the Wirral.
Officers from Merseyside Police were alerted to the address on Reedville, in Oxton, shortly before 4:00pm on Saturday, 3 October, after paramedics initially attended the scene.
North West Ambulance Service personnel had arrived at the property and discovered the young man deceased inside. Police were called immediately afterwards at around 3:55pm.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was subsequently deployed to the address. Specialist officers attended as a precautionary measure to examine and safely remove unidentified substances located within the premises.
If you live nearby or were wondering about the heavy emergency presence in Oxton over the weekend, police have moved quickly to reassure the wider community. Officers confirmed that following the initial assessment by explosive specialists, there is deemed to be no wider risk to the public.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed the details in an official statement: "Merseyside Police can confirm that emergency services remain in Oxton today (Sunday 4 October) following a sudden death yesterday."
The force spokesperson added: "Shortly after 3.55pm on Saturday 3 October, North West Ambulance Service reported they had attended a property on Reedville where they had found a man in his 20s sadly deceased inside."
"Merseyside Police has launched an investigation and following initial enquiries, his death is being treated as unexpected," the spokesperson continued. "His next of kin has been informed and a file will be passed to the Coroner."
Addressing the presence of the bomb squad, the spokesperson noted: "As a precaution, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have attended to assess and remove substances located inside the premises and have deemed there is no wider risk to the public at this stage."
What we do not know yet is the exact nature of the substances removed from the house, or the precise medical cause of the man's death. Authorities have not released the man's identity, though his family has been contacted.
A report is now being prepared for the Coroner to establish the full circumstances surrounding the unexpected death.
I will keep track of any formal updates from Merseyside Police and the Coroner's office as inquiries progress — check back here for updates as we learn more.
