A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of communicating false information following a major security alert at Newcastle University.

Emergency services were called to the city centre campus on Friday afternoon after reports emerged that a suspicious item had been discovered inside a university building.

According to Northumbria Police, officers were alerted to the situation at 2.10pm and immediately deployed to the site on King's Walk.

As a precaution, several university buildings were evacuated while specialist searches were carried out across the affected area.

Police cordoned off surrounding streets to secure the scene, establishing closures along Queen Victoria Road, Brewery Lane, King's Road, and St Thomas' Street.

The disruption temporarily shut down key parts of the university's urban footprint as officers worked to assess the reported threat.

After completing searches of the area, Northumbria Police stood down the incident and confirmed that the immediate security concern had been resolved.

Officers subsequently arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the alert on suspicion of communicating false information.

Northumbria Police have confirmed that the arrested man remains in police custody while their investigation proceeds.

All police cordons across Queen Victoria Road, Brewery Lane, King's Road, and St Thomas' Street have now been removed, and normal access to the campus has reopened.

What we do not know yet is the exact wording or nature of the information that triggered the alert, as investigators have not released further operational details.

I'll be following this one and will bring you fresh updates as soon as Northumbria Police provide them.
