Detectives investigating the murder of 88-year-old Jill Gant in Abingdon have confirmed they do not believe there is any wider threat to the public and are not seeking anyone else in connection with her death.

The update from Thames Valley Police comes as a 36-year-old man from Abingdon remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Emergency services were called to Ms Gant's home on Appleford Drive at around 14:20 BST on Thursday following initial reports of an unexplained death. Officers discovered Ms Gant dead inside the property and immediately opened a formal murder inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin said on Friday that the death is being investigated as a priority, with an increased police presence in the area to reassure the community.

"I understand that incidents like this will cause concern in the community but we are investigating the death as a priority and there is an increased police presence in the area," DCI Brangwin said. "At this early stage we do not currently believe there is any threat to the wider public as we have made an arrest and we are not looking for anyone else, at this time."

DCI Brangwin added that the force's thoughts remain with Ms Gant's family and asked that their privacy be respected. Specially trained officers continue to support her relatives.

What we do not know yet is the formal cause of death, which remains a central part of the continuing investigation. Under British law, the 36-year-old suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence while being questioned by detectives in custody.
