Detectives investigating a fatal house fire in Hounslow have appealed for witnesses and video footage, as a 34-year-old man remains in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder while travelling to France by train.

The Metropolitan Police have asked anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference CAD 359/19Aug, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The arrest by Kent Police followed the blaze at a residential address on Berkeley Avenue, to which emergency services were called at approximately 01:14 BST on Wednesday. Images from the scene showed severe damage to the light-coloured terraced property, with blackened exterior walls, peeling window panes, melted upper eaves and damage spreading to a neighbouring house.

A 48-year-old woman was taken to hospital, where she later died. Another woman, aged 40, remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition.

We previously reported that nine people were taken to hospital in total. Police have clarified that eight other people were taken to hospital; seven of them—six men and one woman—have since been discharged after being treated for minor injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John, who is leading the inquiry, said: 'Our thoughts remain first and foremost with the victim's family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time, as well as everyone who has been injured. Our investigation is continuing at pace and we have arrested one man in connection with the incident.'

He added: 'Detectives are continuing to build a full picture of the circumstances surrounding the incident. We continue to ask any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to please contact us as soon as possible.'

Police have not disclosed further details regarding the circumstances or a suspected motive. An arrest on suspicion is an investigative step and does not imply a formal charge or a finding of guilt.

Specialist fire investigators and police forensic teams continue to examine the scene on Berkeley Avenue to establish the precise cause of the fire.
