The family of a seven-year-old girl who died alongside her aunt in a house fire near Middlesbrough have said their lives have been changed forever.

Valentina Foster died alongside her 34-year-old aunt, Natalie McDonald, after a blaze broke out at a property in Grangetown in the early hours of 26 August.

Paying tribute to Valentina, her family described the impact of her death and the void she leaves behind across the wider community.

"She was deeply loved and will be missed beyond words by her family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched," they said in a statement. "Our lives have changed forever, and we are struggling to come to terms with this devastating loss."

The legal process following the incident is now formally under way. On Tuesday, 23-year-old Jaden Wright appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court charged with two counts of murder in connection with the fire.

Mr Wright has also been charged with multiple offences of grievous bodily harm. As with any criminal proceedings, these allegations will now be examined as the case progresses through the court system.

A second individual had previously been detained in the early stages of the investigation. Cleveland Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released with no further action.

Several other people were caught up in the blaze and required hospital attention. According to police updates, a man and a woman remain in hospital receiving treatment, while two teenage girls have since been discharged.

There had initially been questions raised about whether the fire was tied to wider criminal activity in the region. Cleveland Police stated early on that they could not exclude a potential connection between the blaze and organised crime linked to a crash on the A66, an incident involving seven deaths, including two police officers.

However, investigators have since revisited that line of inquiry and confirmed that the Grangetown fire and the A66 crash are not linked.
