A burglar who killed a pensioner with a headbutt has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Ashley Malcolm received the sentence alongside a further five years on extended licence for the manslaughter of John Burke.
The fatal incident took place in Hackney, east London, where Mr Burke was attacked with a headbutt.
Mr Burke, who was a pensioner, died the day after the assault occurred.
Looking at the specifics of the sentence handed down, Malcolm faces an 18-year custodial term, with an additional five-year period on extended licence to follow.
Malcolm was convicted of manslaughter in connection with Mr Burke's death following the confrontation.
What the available reports do not detail are the precise circumstances leading up to the confrontation inside Hackney, or any statements delivered by the families involved during the hearing.
Where information is not yet on the public record, I prefer to be clear with you about what we do and do not know rather than fill in the gaps.
What is established is that Malcolm will now serve a lengthy term behind bars before his extended licence conditions take effect.
I'll be following this one — check back for updates.
